On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that states are free to ban affirmative action in higher education despite Justice Sotomayor’s defense of the practice. What do you think about this?

Sigh. I realize that as a white male I have no dog in this fight, or really even a right to watch the fight happen. But I can’t help but not like affirmative action. It seems counterproductive, and almost patronizing. “You got this college acceptance letter/scholarship/job because we need a more evenly divided pie chart.”How about giving the acceptance/scholarship/job to the person who fits the position best, regardless of race or gender? Who knows, maybe that would result in an even distribution across race and gender. Maybe it wouldn’t. But if we don’t associate success with race and gender, will it matter?Just a thought, I guess.

Nobody is unique and pretty like they describe in books but you made me feel like that, like some sort of quirky poet on the subway listening to a Joy Division song while tapping my feet to the drums, making it look like I was a rarity of this dull washed out world.
